Christmas revellers told: think! don’t drink and drive

More than 6,000 people were hurt in drink drive related accidents at weekends last year, with more than a third of these injured between 10pm and 3am. To crack down on drinking and driving this Christmas, the Government and Police have once again joined forces to urge anyone hitting the party scene to leave their car keys at home.

The Christmas drink drive THINK! campaign - with brand new Internet and radio adverts - was launched today by the Department for Transport to remind drivers, and young men in particular, just how badly getting behind the wheel after a few drinks can affect their lives. Alongside this, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) will coordinate a nationwide police operation to tackle drink and drug driving over the festive period. Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick was out with Sussex Police in Crawley on Thursday 29 November, to see for himself how dedicated the Police are to taking drink drivers off the road this Christmas. He said:

"Drink driving ruins lives. Last year 540 people died in this pointless, avoidable way - that’s lives shattered and the dreams of family and friends devastated.

"I have been out with Sussex Police on their first Christmas crackdown this year, and was amazed at how even the smallest sign can give drink drivers away to these highly trained officers. Being caught has serious consequences - a criminal record, minimum one year driving ban and large fine. It’s just not worth paying this price for a couple of drinks at the Christmas party. Leave the car keys at home."

More than half a million drivers are stopped and breathalysed each year and with more breath tests carried out in December than other months the Department for Transport has again teamed up with the police to highlight the importance given to preventing drink driving.

Chief Constable Stephen Green, ACPO lead on Roads Policing said: "Tackling drink and drug driving is always a high priority for police forces across the country, but never more so than at Christmas. The festive period is a time for celebration, but with rights come responsibilities which need to be taken seriously if we are all to enjoy this Christmas.

"Forces across the country will be patrolling the roads vigilantly for those driving under the influence and are united in their determination to stop the reckless driving of a few ruining Christmas for the many." As well as new Internet and radio adverts the THINK! Christmas drink drive campaign will include this summer’s new Moment of Doubt TV advert, cinema and in-pub advertising and partnership marketing. The campaign will also hit the road to remind drivers that they have too much to lose from having even one alcoholic drink with shoppers, commuters and party goers in major cities targeted.

Sevenoaks: Godden Green Clinic

Godden Green Clinic, Sevenoaks
Addiction Treatment Programme

About us:

We are able to offer a full range of treatments for all addictions and we accept patients from the age of 16 years. Our Young Persons Unit is able to admit from 12 years of age. Our aim is to provide patients with the necessary skills and resources to enable you to maintain abstinence from your addiction and achieve a sense of personal fulfilment and enhanced quality of life.

The programme is structured to provide a safe and supportive environment for the patient, where they can look at their situation and gain awareness/insight into the recovery process.

Along the way we hope to encourage the development of hope, trust, acceptance and change. This is conducted in an environment where confidentiality is of the utmost importance. The programme is facilitated by a team of trained professional therapists and counsellors.

What does treatment involve?

Treatment at Godden Green Clinic is based on the philosophy that addiction is a progressive illness. We recognise that family are also affected by the person who has an addiction and our programme is specially designed to include the family in the therapeutic process.

We achieve this by offering Family Sessions where the patient and members of their family meet with a therapist to look at issues relevant to that patient\’s recovery. These sessions are highly encouraged but will only take place with the permission of the patient.

There is also a Family Support Group. In meeting and sharing with members of other families in a safe and confidential setting, alternative healthier coping skills can be discovered which help to ease adjustment to the changes involved in living with a person recovering from an addiction.

In order to provide the tools for patients to be abstinent from mood altering substances, we at Godden Green work with an integrative model of therapy. The programme includes detoxification if needed, group therapy, individual key working, lectures, audio visual aides, written assignments and family involvement.
How long does it last and how much does it cost?

Our programme is available via inpatient, daycare or outpatient and our costs vary accordingly.

Aftercare

Treatment does not end after discharge from Godden Green Clinic. We facilitate a range of services including an aftercare group. Following an inpatient stay, our aftercare is designed to smooth the transition from treatment to everyday life.

It is also a monitored process of change and an active counselling intervention. Aftercare is free for twelve months to all ex-patients of the programme.

Our Addiction Treatment Programme is also available to day patients and outpatients.

Each patient is provided with an information pack that contains a timetable of events for the duration of their stay. An average day may include, for example, a one on one meeting with a member of the counselling team, reflective diary session where patients comment on the previous day\’s events, relapse prevention, educational and therapy groups.

A year long free after care service is provided (As deemed appropriate by the counselling team). This consists of three meetings per week at which all patients are welcome to attend.

Treatment We Provide

The focus of the treatment at the Covenant Dependency Centre is to help the alcohol dependent person achieve two goals:

Goal 1: Increased ability to remain abstinent from mood altering drugs

Goal 2: Achieve an improved life style

In order to achieve these goals we have set two treatment objectives:

Objective 1:
Compassionately help the patient safely detoxify whilst aiding them to recognise the severity of their condition.

Objective 2:
Offer guidance and support in recognising the need for help and that the condition can be put in remission.

The pursuit of these goals is not an overnight matter. In light of this we provide a comprehensive year long aftercare programme free of charge in-conjunction with the inpatient treatment. All Covenant treatment stems from validated research. It is understood that alcohol dependent people need help to achieve and maintain abstinence.

Patients can expect the following:

Salisbury: Clouds House

Clouds House, Salisbury
Clouds - help, hope and freedom from addiction to alcohol and drugs.

About us:

Clouds House: A healthy container

Our role is to provide a healthy, well-managed experience through which people will feel able to let go of their potentially fatal attraction to substances. Everything at the treatment centre is organised to give recovery the best possible chance.

Patients

Patients or clients? We are happy to use whatever term people feel comfortable with. Clouds House provides high quality treatment to people from all walks of life, from across the country and even from abroad. We invite patients to contribute their own ideas about the programme so that we can continue to develop more effective treatment for future generations.

Physical and psychological withdrawal

We have the expertise to manage withdrawal from whatever drugs and/or alcohol a person may have been consuming. We do not wait for detoxification to be completed before involving patients in the psychological therapy.

Families

Personal relationships play an important role in recovery. We strongly encourage families to get involved. We also recognise that families have needs of their own.
The dedicated families counsellors at Clouds House are there to support them and can introduce family members to the specialist services of Families Plus.

The Treatment Centre

Clouds House is a 38-bed centre registered by the Commission for Social Care Inspection as a Care Home with Nursing. The commission’s inspection reports can be viewed on its web site. The most recent inspection classed Clouds House as \’providing excellent outcomes for its clients\’ and recommended the centre for the highest CSCI star rating.

The house is situated in the naturally therapeutic environment of beautiful Wiltshire parkland. While we admit over 360 patients a year, we try to ensure against an institutional atmosphere.

We employ our own chefs who produce nourishing, well-presented food. They will readily respond to individual needs based on religious, cultural, dietary or medical considerations.

Our staff

The staff work in teams, each of which has a clear role in delivering the integrated care. They are all vital to the service as a whole. The staff are passionate about their work but they are also trained, supervised, supported and managed to be as effective as possible.

Cost

Clouds House is a service run by a registered charity and is therefore not for profit. We charge enough to ensure that we can continue to deliver and develop treatment and care to a high standard.

If we were in treatment …

If we were in need of treatment and, more importantly, we would want to go to a place that had a sound knowledge of our condition, that took full account of the latest research, that had good facilities and a pleasant environment and most importantly, that had staff that were capable of applying their expertise in a conscientious, skilful and caring way.

That’s the approach that we are trying our best to perfect at Clouds House.

clouds - the 12-step programme

Our fundamental task is to provide a safe environment and a culture in which change is possible. Our watchwords are care, respect, trust and support. The programme offers structure, containment and direction for those whose lives have become chaotic. Above all, it offers real hope.

Research shows that affiliation to the 12-Step self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous is a significant indicator of successfully maintaining a drug and alcohol free lifestyle after treatment, and that relapse into active addiction is clearly linked to feelings of depression and demoralisation. Our programme is structured to address these issues by introducing you to the 12-Step philosophy, and the instillation of hope through being part of a community where inter‑personal and intra-personal issues are addressed.

You will be expected to attend local meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and on Saturdays an ex-service user returns to Clouds House to share their experiences of recovery with those currently in treatment.

clouds - the treatment programme

Due to the time-scale of our treatment and the need for a focused approach in order to be able to successfully deal with the powerful dynamics of addiction, we place some limitations on your personal choices whilst in treatment.

As a result you will be expected to participate in all therapeutic activities that are scheduled throughout the day, unless unable to do so through being unwell. You will not be encouraged to spend time in your bedroom during the day unless agreed by the clinical staff.

The treatment programme comprises:

· Group therapy – including men’s/women’s groups
· Education through lectures
· Workshops
· Educational videos
· One-to-one counselling
· Reading/writing assignments

There are additional creative workshops, such as:

· Creative Writing
· Art Therapy
· Drumming workshops
· Dramatherapy/Theatre Workshops

As well as reading and writing assignments, there are practical tasks which are designed to help you develop better ways of relating to others and dealing with problems. A great deal of the therapeutic gain comes from the experience of living together with others working towards the same goal; making a contribution to a community whose sole purpose is recovery.

An important part of working together and learning how to live differently is engaging with the everyday tasks that serve to punctuate our lives on a daily basis ‑ learning to take responsibility for your personal belongings and making your own bed each day are just two examples. Therapeutic Duties around the House are assigned weekly taking into account your current physical ability – for example you may be asked to vacuum clean the shared lounge area or set the meal tables.
