Two premises in Darlington sold alcohol to under-18s in a recent Trading Standards underage alcohol sale test.
On Thursday 29 December, Darlington Council Trading Standards Officers, along with a volunteer and a licensing officer from the Police, visited five premises in the Borough which are licensed to sell alcohol. Two of the premises sold alcohol to the under-18 year old volunteer.
The Council’s Licensing team which deals with the licensing of such premises has been advised of the evidence obtained.
Premises found to sell alcohol to under-18s can face court action resulting in fines of up to £5000 and/or six months imprisonment.
The Council’s Trading Standards team carries out underage sales tests throughout the year. Tests are carried out over the Christmas and New Year period when traders must be extra vigilant in requesting age identification before selling alcohol.
An age restricted sales training day will be held on Wednesday 25 January to help traders learn more about their legal responsibilities when selling all age restricted products.
The event is part of the Trading Standards Institute ‘The Fair Trading Award’ which aims to help businesses and their staff understand what the law requires of them; explain due diligence and provide information on the challenge 25 scheme, the event will also look at how to deal with refusals and staff training. Any trader wanting to take part in the training day can contact Darlington Council’s Trading Standards team on 01325 388984 to book a place.
Chris McEwan, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration, said: “It is disappointing to see that premises in Darlington have sold alcohol to under-18s.
“There is training and guidance available to traders to help them and their staff spot underage customers and challenge customers’ age to ensure they are selling alcohol in accordance with the law.
“Our underage sales tests will continue to help us identify premises which do sell alcohol to under-18s and to work with them to ensure they do not do so again in the future.”
