Nottingham Community Protection have issued a Christmas warning to licencees and off-licences about young people trying to buy alcohol over the festive season.
Nottingham’s Council House
It follows a series of test purchases in the Wollaton and Bestwood areas of Nottingham when a 15-year-old boy went out with Trading Standards officers.
He visited nine premises and in four of them he wasn’t asked for identification. He was able to buy alcohol at three and cigarettes at one. These were a can Budweiser, a can Stella, a can Smirnoff and Coke and a packet of 10 Richmond King Size cigarettes. This equates to a 44 per cent failure rate.
Councillor Jon Collins, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “This is a shocking result and more than three times the level we would expect to see when we carry out test purchases. It represents a 44 per cent failure rate on the part of the licensees and off-licencees compared to an average of 14 per cent.
“Nottingham’s Community Protection service and the City Council’s Trading Standards will investigate all the sales with a view to taking legal action and reviewing the licenses of those who sold alcohol.
“I would urge all licencees and staff to make sure they are asking for identification to check the ages of any shoppers who are buying alcohol, cigarettes or any other age-restricted items, especially now Christmas celebrations are here.
“The dangers are of under-age drinking are obvious. Children in drink don’t make rational decisions, join in risky or anti-social behaviour and can be a danger to themselves and to others.”
