I've just seen this piece and thought I had better clarify my position. I'm not going to claim I was misquoted and the journalist was asking a perfectly valid question. I was asked at short-notice to speculate on what were, to be honest, figures that took me by surprise, and without more details on the figures on which these statistics are based it was a mistake to speculate.
As a resident of Exeter for many years I've actually always regarded the drinking culture of the city as fairly typical and in line with what is happening up and down the UK, and that applies to the student population as well.
I regret that I appeared to suggest students in Exeter are particularly responsible. I entirely agree that students should enjoy this unique phase of there lives, and while many will drink at increased risk levels while making the most of university social life was certainly not suggesting that they are all going to end up needing services like ours!
That said, what I am convinced about is that the consultant from the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital quoted in the same piece is right in saying that changes in drinking culture are adding to the UK's growing problems with alcohol and the physical damage of alcohol abuse is increasingly manifesting itself among younger people.
In light of the recent closure of a treatment centre in Devon, I was interested to read that there are four times more treatment centres in the county that three years ago. Could you let me which centres these are?

My answer is simple, i think the problem isn't with the alcohol itself its within the psychology of the person drinking. Now i don't know too much about this but
*Laws regarding buying under age alcohol should be increased publicly
*Shops have to refuse Intoxicated customers with fitted alarm button if needed
* Alcohol could be priced on the % of volume on the drink/amount
*Have a drugs/alcohol worker visit secondary schools around london
to explain to children the possibility of over use.
*Make alcohol groups more willing to offer help for others anonymously/independently
such as leaving their cards in pubs or handing them out
and well as tackle the problem before it gets out of hand.
now im not saying stop everyone from drinking, just easier accessibility of groups
and showing how more responsible drinking can be better instead
because for young people as i gather it is "cooler" to be more drunk than everyone else.

Just a thought, sharing my ideas.
