Salisbury: Clouds House

Clouds House, Salisbury
Clouds - help, hope and freedom from addiction to alcohol and drugs.

About us:

Clouds House: A healthy container

Our role is to provide a healthy, well-managed experience through which people will feel able to let go of their potentially fatal attraction to substances. Everything at the treatment centre is organised to give recovery the best possible chance.

Patients

Patients or clients? We are happy to use whatever term people feel comfortable with. Clouds House provides high quality treatment to people from all walks of life, from across the country and even from abroad. We invite patients to contribute their own ideas about the programme so that we can continue to develop more effective treatment for future generations.

Physical and psychological withdrawal

We have the expertise to manage withdrawal from whatever drugs and/or alcohol a person may have been consuming. We do not wait for detoxification to be completed before involving patients in the psychological therapy.

Families

Personal relationships play an important role in recovery. We strongly encourage families to get involved. We also recognise that families have needs of their own.
The dedicated families counsellors at Clouds House are there to support them and can introduce family members to the specialist services of Families Plus.

The Treatment Centre

Clouds House is a 38-bed centre registered by the Commission for Social Care Inspection as a Care Home with Nursing. The commission’s inspection reports can be viewed on its web site. The most recent inspection classed Clouds House as \’providing excellent outcomes for its clients\’ and recommended the centre for the highest CSCI star rating.

The house is situated in the naturally therapeutic environment of beautiful Wiltshire parkland. While we admit over 360 patients a year, we try to ensure against an institutional atmosphere.

We employ our own chefs who produce nourishing, well-presented food. They will readily respond to individual needs based on religious, cultural, dietary or medical considerations.

Our staff

The staff work in teams, each of which has a clear role in delivering the integrated care. They are all vital to the service as a whole. The staff are passionate about their work but they are also trained, supervised, supported and managed to be as effective as possible.

Cost

Clouds House is a service run by a registered charity and is therefore not for profit. We charge enough to ensure that we can continue to deliver and develop treatment and care to a high standard.

If we were in treatment …

If we were in need of treatment and, more importantly, we would want to go to a place that had a sound knowledge of our condition, that took full account of the latest research, that had good facilities and a pleasant environment and most importantly, that had staff that were capable of applying their expertise in a conscientious, skilful and caring way.

That’s the approach that we are trying our best to perfect at Clouds House.

clouds - the 12-step programme

Our fundamental task is to provide a safe environment and a culture in which change is possible. Our watchwords are care, respect, trust and support. The programme offers structure, containment and direction for those whose lives have become chaotic. Above all, it offers real hope.

Research shows that affiliation to the 12-Step self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous is a significant indicator of successfully maintaining a drug and alcohol free lifestyle after treatment, and that relapse into active addiction is clearly linked to feelings of depression and demoralisation. Our programme is structured to address these issues by introducing you to the 12-Step philosophy, and the instillation of hope through being part of a community where inter‑personal and intra-personal issues are addressed.

You will be expected to attend local meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and on Saturdays an ex-service user returns to Clouds House to share their experiences of recovery with those currently in treatment.

clouds - the treatment programme

Due to the time-scale of our treatment and the need for a focused approach in order to be able to successfully deal with the powerful dynamics of addiction, we place some limitations on your personal choices whilst in treatment.

As a result you will be expected to participate in all therapeutic activities that are scheduled throughout the day, unless unable to do so through being unwell. You will not be encouraged to spend time in your bedroom during the day unless agreed by the clinical staff.

The treatment programme comprises:

· Group therapy – including men’s/women’s groups
· Education through lectures
· Workshops
· Educational videos
· One-to-one counselling
· Reading/writing assignments

There are additional creative workshops, such as:

· Creative Writing
· Art Therapy
· Drumming workshops
· Dramatherapy/Theatre Workshops

As well as reading and writing assignments, there are practical tasks which are designed to help you develop better ways of relating to others and dealing with problems. A great deal of the therapeutic gain comes from the experience of living together with others working towards the same goal; making a contribution to a community whose sole purpose is recovery.

An important part of working together and learning how to live differently is engaging with the everyday tasks that serve to punctuate our lives on a daily basis ‑ learning to take responsibility for your personal belongings and making your own bed each day are just two examples. Therapeutic Duties around the House are assigned weekly taking into account your current physical ability – for example you may be asked to vacuum clean the shared lounge area or set the meal tables.
