A new addition to our treatment programme is therapeutic art:

The artwork at Castle Craig is co-ordinated by our artist in residence, Ingrid Christie.

The art work sessions are tailor-made to allow people to express themselves in a unique and stimulating way. To engage in the art groups there is no need for any previous experience or art skills.

The art group is conducted in a relaxed and informal setting and the aim is not only to encourage creativity and promote self-esteem, but also to reduce stress and allow people to explore their feelings. For many, this opportunity is an introduction to a new and pleasurable pastime. During each session, participants learn about the work of a national or international artist so that there is also an educational element to the group.

The methods used are generally abstract and the exercises, although following a structure, also leave space for individual self-expression. The work itself is very revealing although it is not analysed within the group as this may inhibit expressive freedom. Rather, interpretations are made in conjunction with the consultant psychiatrist and therapeutic team.

There is access to a variety of art materials including paints, pastels, oil sticks, crayons and collage. The dedicated studio space is situated away from the main clinic and is surrounded by open countryside. This location and the unrestricted studio space allows individuals a unique arena in which to explore their creativity.

"Facilitating the art groups has been an eye-opening and rewarding experience for me too. I hadn't realised how much my own experience as a practicing artist could be of value and how useful that repertoire of painting skills is to the patients. The art group is a heart-warming experience, many of our participants find it overwhelming when they stand before a piece of artwork they have created. Tapping into one's creativity centre is more often than not a magical experience" - Ingrid Christie
